Canadian airline pilots have some of the longest shifts in the world. Despite ALPA’s continued efforts to update Canada’s outdated flight/duty time rule, the country’s pilots are often required to be alert for more than 14 hours, which can be extended to 17 hours in the event of weather or mechanical delays, putting them at greater risk for accidents and safety incidents due to fatigue.

This week, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) convened the second meeting of the Drone Advisory Committee (DAC). ALPA was appointed to this group, which was established last year and we continue to have an active role in helping advise the FAA on prioritized policy areas that are urgently needed to ensure that as UAS operations expand, they do not compromise the safety of our shared airspace.

This afternoon, the U.S. Senate confirmed Elaine Chao by a 93-6 vote to serve as our nation’s 18th Secretary of Transportation. ALPA looks forward to working with Secretary Chao to advance the aviation industry and ensure that the United States continues to usher millions of passengers and tons of cargo safely to global destinations each and every day and night.

Many gift givers not only ship packages, but also bring gifts on board flights. If not disclosed and handled properly, lithium batteries and other hazardous materials such as food packed in dry ice or flammable liquids can present a serious risk.
