ALPA Pilots Welcome DOT Secretary Chao with Call to Reverse NAI

This afternoon, the U.S. Senate confirmed Elaine Chao by a 93-6 vote to serve as our nation’s 18th Secretary of Transportation. ALPA looks forward to working with Secretary Chao to advance the aviation industry and ensure that the United States continues to usher millions of passengers and tons of cargo safely to global destinations each and every day and night.

With Secretary Chao's confirmation comes an opportunity to reverse the decision to grant Norwegian Air International's (NAI) foreign air carrier permit. Today, the pilots of ALPA welcomed Secretary Chao with a Call to Action, urging the Department of Transportation to take the first step to reverse the NAI decision.

ALPA has been a vocal opponent of NAI’s flag-of-convenience business model that has already significantly diminished our county’s maritime shipping industry. We urge Secretary Chao to begin the process to overturn an Obama Administration’s decision that hurts American aviation workers and creates an unlevel playing field for foreign air carriers. It is time to protect U.S. jobs, enforce our trade agreements and put America first.
