Wasilla Pilot Recognized for Contributions to Improve Crewmember Safety

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA) today will recognize Alaska Airlines Capt. Darrin Dorn with its Aviation Security Award for his innumerable accomplishments in enhancing pilot safety and security. ALPA will present the award, its highest security honor, to Capt. Dorn at the 61st Air Safety Forum in Washington, D.C.

“Capt. Dorn’s dedication and commitment to his fellow pilots and aviation security overall have been instrumental in achieving results that will be felt throughout ALPA and our industry for years to come,” said Capt. Tim Canoll, ALPA president. “As a powerful advocate for effective and efficient aviation security initiatives, Capt. Dorn has played a key role in helping to safeguard the global airline industry.”

Capt. Dorn began his aviation career in the U.S. Army, where he served as a Ranger and Special Forces non-commissioned officer before becoming both a fixed wing and rotary wing master Army aviator. A truly accomplished professional, he completed his undergraduate studies from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and his graduate studies from Embry–Riddle Aeronautical University. Capt. Dorn has been flying for Alaska Airlines since 2001.

With a keen interest in advancing individual crewmember safety, Capt. Dorn joined ALPA’s National Security Council in 2009 and serves as chairman of the Alaska Airlines Master Executive Council Security Committee. As a result of his vast experience and efforts, he is a trusted subject-matter expert in aviation security and the Federal Flight Deck Officer program.

“Thanks to Capt. Dorn’s tremendous contributions, we have made positive changes within many key ALPA programs. His leadership is invaluable to his fellow pilots and our industry,” added Canoll.

Captain Dorn’s numerous accomplishments include introducing the individual crewmember security concept to ALPA, which resulted in a specialized training program. He was also instrumental in developing a video series for pilots to enhance situational awareness and improve crewmember security. Captain Dorn serves as ALPA’s contact in Los Angeles for the FBI/ALPA Laser Awareness Campaign.
