CanJet Pilots Vote for ALPA Representation

WASHINGTON, DC --- The Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA), the world’s largest pilot union, today announced that the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) has certified it to represent the pilots of CanJet Airlines. The announcement comes as the union makes a renewed commitment to attract more member pilots into the Association through strategic and targeted organizing campaigns.

The CIRB, the tribunal responsible for labour relations in the federal sector (which includes aviation), issued the certification order on June 26 in Ottawa. After conducting an informational campaign, more than 90 percent of CanJet pilots indicated their desire for ALPA representation.

“We welcome the pilots of CanJet to ALPA and look forward to working with them,” said Capt. Duane Woerth, ALPA’s president. “Their addition strengthens ALPA’s presence in Canada, which in turn allows us to do more for all our Canadian members and gets us one step closer to our ultimate goal of representing every airline pilot in the United States and Canada.”

Capt. Josh Kelly, a CanJet pilot and president of the CanJet pilots’ association; the CJPA, commented on the certification by saying, “Our pilots are convinced that membership in ALPA will help to bring more stability to our work lives while maintaining our positive relationship with our company. We believe that with ALPA representation, we will achieve collective bargaining agreements with the company that address our needs, while still providing management the operational flexibility it needs to compete effectively.”

CanJet, a division of IMP Group, is headquartered in Halifax, NS, and serves 14 cities in eastern Canada and the U.S. The company currently flies 10 Boeing 737s. ALPA now represents six cargo and passenger carriers in Canada.

ALPA is the world’s largest pilots union, representing 62,000 airline pilots (now including approximately 100 at CanJet) at 40 airlines in Canada and the United States. Visit the ALPA website at
