Basic Safety School (BSS)

Course Content

The Basic Safety School (BSS) provides initial Safety Structure orientation, administration, communication and elementary incident and accident investigation training to new pilot safety representatives. Training received equips them to confidently work within the ALPA Safety Structure to effectively support their own pilot group and to deal with representatives from government and management.

Training is accomplished in two modules over a two and one half day period

Safety Administration I acquaints the volunteer with the ALPA Safety Structure and safety committee responsibilities and functions.

Introduction to Accident/Incident Investigation equips the volunteer with an elementary level of knowledge in aircraft incident and accident investigation. Those who have completed the training will have an understanding of how to effectively participate on their MEC Safety Committee as a member of an NTSB investigation.

Expected knowledge and skills upon completion

  • Demonstrate a functional knowledge of MEC Safety Structure administration
  • Capable of working effectively on Safety Committee projects
  • Able to conduct an incident investigation or serve on a group
  • Serve effectively as a group member of an NTSB/TSBC aircraft accident investigation

Expenses

Your MEC/CASC budget pays for all of your pilot expenses: travel, sleeping rooms, meals, and flight pay loss (if required). This includes no-shows for hotel rooms where reservations have been requested and NOT canceled 48 hours prior to arrival and/or if the attendee fails to notify the hotel, during check-in, of a different departure date than the reserved.
