Every two years, the United MEC elects a slate of four officers to serve the pilots of United Airlines. The officers below were elected in January of 2022 and began their term March 1, 2022.
Captain Mike Hamilton - Chair
Captain Mike Hamilton was elected as Master Chairman of the United MEC at the January 2022 MEC meeting. Captain Hamilton began flying for United Airlines in 1997 after flying for Air Midwest. He is currently a 757/767 Captain in Denver. Before serving as Master Chair, Captain Hamilton has served in ALPA leadership positions throughout his career at United which include two terms as a local council representative, three terms as the MEC Secretary-Treasurer and six terms as ALPA International Executive Vice President. He has also served as a volunteer on numerous United MEC and ALPA International committees.
Captain Hamilton grew up in the Chicago area graduating from Benet Academy before earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Aeronautics from Park College of Saint Louis University in 1997. He currently resides in the Denver area with his wife and two sons who are currently attending college.
Captain Tom Murphy - Vice Chair
Captain Tom Murphy was re-elected for a third term as Vice Chairman of the UAL MEC. He was hired at United in 1996 and is currently a B-777 Captain based in Washington, D.C. Murphy has been an ALPA volunteer for over two decades. Prior to becoming an MEC officer, he served as a local council officer and representative for two terms, a P2P coordinator, PBS instructor, LOSA observer, and was a volunteer on the hotel and communications committees. Captain Murphy has a bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University and a master’s degree from Marist College. He and his wife live in Annapolis, MD where they enjoy sailing together on the Chesapeake.
First Officer Paul Ryder - Secretary
First Officer Paul Ryder, a Newark-based 757 First Officer, is serving his first term as MEC secretary. F/O Ryder previously served two terms as ALPA’s national resource coordinator (NRC) facilitating ALPA staff and resources to support members and pilot groups. An ALPA member since 2004, Ryder has also served on the national education committee, chaired the Fee for Departure Committee, and served on ExpressJet’s pilot-to-pilot (P2P), pilot mentor, and joint strategic planning committees. Ryder previously served as a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps including conducting missions in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Captain Mike Harrison - Treasurer
Captain Mike Harrison started his career with United Airlines in March 1991. He is currently a 777 Captain based in EWR. Mike served ALPA as the Captain Representative for Council 11, (DCA) and has been the Chairman of the Crew Rest Oversight Committee since 2016. He has also worked in the Pilot Compensation Committee for five years, including as the Chairman since 2020. Mike and his wife Sophie live in Florida.
