ALPA Statement on Transportation Safety Board of Canada’s 2016 Safety Watchlist

Ottawa, Ont.—In a statement today by the Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA) after the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) released their 2016 Watchlist of key safety initiatives, ALPA Canada Board president Capt. Dan Adamus issued the following in support of faster implementation on important safety measures:

“Every two years the TSB Watchlist identifies key safety issues across various modes of transportation. This year, the need for Transport Canada to act on TSB recommendations was added to the list. We share TSB’s concern that Transport Canada has made very little progress over the years on many critical safety measures.

“Earlier this year, Transport Canada announced long-overdue regulations on managing flightcrew fatigue, but issued differing timelines, as long as four years, for final implementation of the new rules depending on airline operations. ALPA once again reiterates our call for a single, timely implementation process for all Canadian carriers.

“Updating flight-time/duty-time and minimum rest requirements has been one of the most important aviation safety initiatives for flight crews in Canada, and these new rules are long overdue.”

Founded in 1931, ALPA is the world’s largest pilot union, representing more than 54,000 pilots at 31 airlines in the United States and Canada, including the flightcrew members who fly for Air Transat, Bearskin, Calm Air, Canadian North, First Air, Jazz Aviation, Kelowna Flightcraft, and Wasaya.
