Captain R. Sean McKeown Receives ALPA’s Pilot Assistance Award

Instrumental in Combining United and Continental Pilot Assistance Programs

Captain R. Sean McKeown receives the 2015 Pilot Assistance Award from ALPA President Captain Tim Canoll.

WASHINGTON, D.C.—At the opening of the 62nd Air Safety Forum today, the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA), announced that it will recognize United Airlines Capt. R. Sean McKeown with this year’s Pilot Assistance Award. ALPA will present its prestigious award to Capt. McKeown for his extraordinary service in leading pilot health and wellness programs.

“Capt. McKeown’s passion for ensuring that his fellow crewmembers have access to the myriad of programs that provide support for pilots both in the cockpit and at home is inspiring,” said Capt. Tim Canoll, ALPA president. “The dedication and selflessness of pilot advocates like Capt. McKeown has made a significant difference to his colleagues. It is an honor to recognize Capt. McKeown’s dedication to ensuring that pilots maintain a healthy career track with this year’s Pilot Assistance Award.”

Through tireless efforts, Capt. McKeown has helped pilots continue their careers through mentoring and monitoring. After the merger of United and Continental Airlines, he played an instrumental role in the combining both airlines’ award-winning Pilot Assistance programs into one cohesive group.

For over 15 years, Capt. McKeown has actively promoted the airline piloting profession, unselfishly giving his time and energy to help peers when they need help the most, regardless of the hour.

“Capt. McKeown personifies the motto of ‘Pilots Helping Pilots,” said Capt. Todd Insler, chairman of the United MEC. “His unselfish approach to his profession continues to help improve the lives of his fellow pilots and their families. His hard work and determination are shining examples of what ALPA volunteers can accomplish.”

“Combining resources after an airline merger is no easy task, but Capt. McKeown demonstrated leadership, dedication, compassion, and integrity during a difficult time. His devotion to the profession has made the over 10,000 United pilots stronger, and he continues to serve as a testament to our profession,” added Canoll.

Founded in 1931, ALPA is the largest airline pilot union in the world and represents over 54,000 pilots at 31 U.S. and Canadian airlines. Visit the ALPA website at www.alpa.org or follow us on Twitter @WeAreALPA.
