ASO Safety Chairman Presents ALPA Views at European Conference

Capt. Steve Jangelis (Delta), ALPA’s Air Safety Organization (ASO) Aviation Safety chairman, provided ALPA’s perspective on Aviation Safety Information Analysis and Sharing (ASIAS) at the European Aviation Safety Agency’s 5th annual Flight Data Monitoring Conference in Cologne, Germany, in mid-June. The 140 conference participants included government regulators, airlines, and manufacturers.

Participating on a panel with U.S. airline leaders and manufacturers, Jangelis stressed the importance of cooperation among regulators, manufacturers, airlines, and ALPA to maximize the effectiveness of ASIAS. Through ASIAS, the airline industry holistically looks at safety data to continue to further reduce the historically low accident rate in North America. Jangelis also emphasized the importance of data confidentiality and the need to maintain trust among all participants to ensure the success of the program.

ALPA Hosts MMEL Industry Group

ALPA recently hosted the 106th meeting of the Master Minimum Equipment List (MMEL) Industry Group at the Association’s Conference Center in Herndon, Va. The group, initially formed in 1991 to assist the FAA with developing MMEL policy and revisions, consists of airline operators, manufacturers, and labor organizations.

ALPA’s Air Safety Organization representatives from the Aircraft Design & Operations Group, along with Engineering & Air Safety Department staff, actively participate in the group to provide ALPA’s perspective on MMEL policies.
