FAA Evaluating New Standardized Approach Hold Guidance Signs

The FAA has requested ALPA's assistance in soliciting pilots who are willing to participate in operational research evaluations of newly developed, standardized, approach hold guidance signs. The evaluations are being conducted in the agency's A320 flight simulator located at the FAA Technical Center in Atlantic City, N.J. The evaluation period ends March 28, 2014.

The FAA's evaluation program is comprised of operating the aircraft in day, night, and reduced-visibility conditions. The signs evaluated in the simulation laboratory will be on the Chicago O'Hare airport located on Taxiway Tango and Runway 09L-27R.

Assessments from each simulation will be compiled and analyzed to determine which of the sign configuration options is most effective. When completed, the results will be used to revise existing airport and air traffic control regulations and guidance material.

The purpose of these signs is to identify where the aircraft must stop on the airport to remain clear of the established runway safety area for departures and arrivals on an active runway. The signs will be placed on the side of the hard surface in conjunction with the pavement marking.

If you would like to participate or have any questions regarding your participation in these evaluations, please direct them to the FAA project coordinator, Hal Olson, at 609-204-7044 or hal.olson@hitecsystems.com.
