Week in Review: Watch ALPA Pilots Take Action

Thought it was just a Day of Action? Watch this video and think again. ALPA staff and pilots hammered Washington, D.C., with the Deny NAI message last week, beginning with the takeover of a D.C. Metro station with ads and the release of a new whiteboard video. Then, pilots flew in and took to Capitol Hill, visiting all 535 House and Senate offices to deliver our unified message. By the end of the week, Capt. Moak addressed an international audience at a world aviation conference in Antwerp, Belgium (story below).

Today is critical: ALPA is closely following a meeting between the European Commission and the U.S. Departments of State and Transportation—another reason we need you to get involved. After you watch (and share) the week of action video, head to Twitter to tell your federal legislators why they should listen to their voting constituents and #DenyNAI. And, check out Storify for a week in review, social media style.

Have a Safe and Happy Thanksgiving!

The Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l wishes our U.S. members a happy Thanksgiving Day. During this busy holiday travel season, thousands of passengers every day are thankful for the safe, secure, and reliable flights that you provide around the clock to get them and their packages to their families and friends. We hope you have the same pleasant and safe holiday experience you’re able to provide for so many, too!

In observance of the Thanksgiving holiday, the ALPA offices will close at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 26 and remain closed until Monday, December 1.

Endeavor TA Will Boost Pilot Retention, Address Economic Concerns

The pilots of Endeavor Air, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l, announced a tentative agreement with Endeavor management that addresses the pilots’ immediate economic concerns and also represents an attempt to stem pilot attrition in order to help secure a more promising future for the airline.

“During the past few weeks the company and pilot leaders have worked hard to develop a range of concepts designed to address attrition, particularly first officer attrition, which has recently risen to unsustainable levels,” said Capt. Jonathan Allen, Master Executive Council (MEC) chairman of the Endeavor Air branch of ALPA. “The agreement would make total annual compensation of Endeavor first officers the highest among U.S. regional jet operators while bringing total pay for topped-out captains near the industry and Delta Connection averages.”

Bipartisan Group of 188 House Members Again Urge Secretary Foxx to Deny NAI

Yesterday, ALPA issued a statement in response to the bipartisan appeal, championed by representatives Chris Collins (R-N.Y.) and Albio Sires (D-N.J.), calling on the Department of Transportation (DOT) to deny Norwegian Air International’s (NAI) application to fly to and from the United States.

“The Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l commends the leadership of the 188 lawmakers, from both sides of the aisle, who raised concerns that NAI’s application would create an unlevel playing field for U.S. airlines.”

Pilots Are the Ultimate Investors in Building Strong, Competitive Airlines

On November 21, Capt. Lee Moak became the first labor CEO to participate in the Centre for Aviation—CAPA summit program. In remarks before a panel at the World Aviation Summit in Belgium, ALPA’s president underscored that airline pilots have a role as the ultimate investors in their companies and that they share a common commitment with management to build economically strong and competitive airlines.

“Pilots have a vested interest in making certain our companies are bold competitors on the world economic stage,” said Moak. Highlighting the positive results of collaboration between the union and individual airline managements, he emphasized successful efforts to work together through bankruptcy, mergers, and international joint ventures to forge economically sound companies that are competitive on the global economic stage.
