ALPA Launches Hot Topics Web Site

This week, ALPA launched www.alpa.org/hottopics to address a big threat to U.S. pilot careers: heavily state-backed foreign airlines that are coming after the U.S. airline industry, routes, and jobs. On this site, you’ll find video productions as well as editorial content that demonstrate how these foreign airlines, operating without taxes or regulatory burdens, are endangering your career and what ALPA is doing to protect our industry. Check back often, as more content will be added.

Visit the Hot Topics site.

News articles referencing ALPA during the past week:

Laser strikes on U.S. airlines getting worse by the day (USA Today)
“It really is a big problem and a growing problem,” said Capt. Sean Cassidy, first vice president of the Air Line Pilots Association. “They’re introducing another distraction into an environment where we need to be incredibly focused.”

Boeing might be about to get the biggest passenger-plane order in its history from Dubai (Quartz)
“The purchase would add to worries of traditional carriers in the US, Europe and Asia who complain that Gulf carriers like Emirates, a state-owned airline, get government support. (Emirates says it doesn’t get any kind of government subsidies.) [The Air Line] Pilots Association argues that the carrier poses unfair competition because it doesn’t have to pay the same tax or deal with the same security and regulatory policies US carriers must follow. Indian airlines have similar complaints. According to one analyst, for the foreseeable future, legacy airlines will ‘have to fight’ to stave off challenges like that of Emirates.”

KFC MEC Endorses Tentative Agreement

After six months of demanding negotiations, the Kelowna Flightcraft MEC Negotiating Committee in September reached an agreement with the Company that provides the pilots a more secure future.

Last week, the KFC MEC unanimously voted to send the tentative agreement and memorandum of understanding out to the pilots for ratification. The KFC MEC and Negotiating Committee support and endorse the TA and the MOU and recommend the pilots vote in favor when balloting is conducted November 18 to December 10.

ExpressJet Pilots Meet with ATC

A combined group of more than 25 pilots from ExpressJet and other airlines with Houston bases, and Houston air traffic controllers from Ground, Clearance Delivery, Ground Metering, Tower, and Departure/Approach met recently to discuss a number of top issues in an event designed to improve communication and enhance safety. The event was highly successful, yielding an exchange of questions and answers from pilots to controllers and vice-versa. The event will be repeated in the future.

Specific topics included the new Ground metering frequency, UAVs (drones) and the discontinuation of plans to build a new runway south of Runway 9-27. The group also discussed reasons for a number of ATC clearances such as slowing down, vectors, or denial of direct-to requests.

Information about future events between pilots and ATC will be published when available.

P4P Remembers Sandy

Hurricane Sandy made landfall in the United States a year ago today, and the ALPA Emergency Relief Fund was there for Association members and their families, offering aid when they needed it the most. Pilots for Pilots issued 31 grants totaling more than $50,000 in response to this tragic event. One grant recipient responded, “I am so grateful to everyone who made [P4P] a resource for me and other families in need.”

Remember that P4P provides for the immediate needs of ALPA members and their families who fall victim to these widespread disasters. P4P covers early out-of-pocket expenses to help pilots and their families recover faster. To learn more about the fund, make a donation, or request a grant, visit www.alpa.org/relieffund. Donations are tax-deductible in the United States and grants are available to all members and their families who qualify.
