ALPA’s New FT/DT App: 4,500 Downloaded. Did You?

Tuesday’s launch of the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA) FT/DT application was popular with ALPA members as more than 4,500 pilots downloaded the FAR 117 app in the two days since its release.

As a result, we’ve had almost instant feedback which highlights the fact that pilots with Apple devices running on iOS 6 or later are having success with the app. On the flipside, those using an iPad 1 or iOS 5 are having compatibility issues. ALPA IT is working on a fix that will address those backwards-compatibility issues and will have that update in the App Store as soon as possible.

ALPA Executive Board Features National Officer Reports

This week’s ALPA Executive Board Meeting featured reports from the Association’s four national officers. Read the full story from Tuesday’s FastRead. Or watch highlights from their reports.

ALPA-PAC Striving Toward 2013 Goals

On Wednesday, October 23, Zack Mooneyham, ALPA-PAC coordinator, briefed the Executive Board about the PAC’s progress toward its 2013 goals. He enumerated three key metrics the PAC is working toward:

1,200 new sign-ups in 2013: so far, the PAC has signed up over 900 new contributors this year. Help the PAC reach its goal by joining here.

300 Project Wingman participants: this number was doubled after the program exceeded its original goal of enlisting 150 new contributors through the program. 217 contributors have signed up through the programs so far this year. Learn more about Project Wingman here.

$1 million+ in receipts: between January and September, ALPA-PAC raised over $765,000, putting us on pace to cross $1 million for the first time since 2008. Becoming a $1 million+/year PAC will send a strong signal to the D.C. community that ALPA is taking its presence in Washington seriously and that we are a force on the political scene.

While the PAC is moving effectively toward these goals, Mooneyham said that we cannot slow down. “We don’t want to just reach our goals, we want to exceed them so we can set up for next year,” he said.

Norwegian Air Shuttle Announces U.S. Destinations—Undercutting U.S. Carriers

Last week, Norwegian Air Shuttle (NAS) announced that they will begin serving three U.S. destinations from London’s Gatwick airport next summer. Norwegian Air Shuttle plans to offer extremely low fares, undercutting U.S. carriers in the market by as much as 50 percent.

This clear threat to our U.S. airline industry underscores the need to recognize the unfair advantages used by some foreign airlines to take markets from U.S. airlines. It’s time for the U.S. government to step in and level the playing field.

Learn more about how ALPA is pushing the U.S. government to save our skies by supporting a strong U.S. airline industry.

National CIRP Chairs Meet in Denver

Last week, 46 pilots and mental health professionals attended the annual Critical Incident Response Program (CIRP) chairs meeting at the United Airlines Training Center in Denver, Colo., with both meeting space and audio-visual support donated by United Airlines. Pilot volunteers from three countries and 27 airlines (including 14 ALPA carriers) met to get the latest training, review the CIRP manual and mission, and discuss the latest CIRP activities. CIRP volunteers left with a renewed commitment to help fellow pilots cope with the stress reactions that come from an incident or accident.

Major Changes in O’Hare Operations

As of last week, operations at O’Hare have changed. The result is a major change for both pilots and controllers in how O’Hare conducts operations. Be alert for possible confusion until everyone becomes familiar with the new operations. As always, if there is any doubt as to control instructions that you are given, query the controller.
