Emirates Puts Its Stamp on 777X (Aviation International News)
Emirates’ explosive growth has caught the attention of U.S. airlines and groups such as the Air Line Pilots Association, which issued a statement last week calling Emirates’ new route between Milan and New York “a clear first step in a long-term strategy by a heavily supported state-owned foreign airline to undercut U.S. airlines and hurt U.S. jobs.”

US Airlines Are Whining About Foreign Carriers Stealing Their Customers, But It's Their Own Fault (Business Insider)
In a June 2013 white paper titled “Leveling the Playing Field,” ALPA said U.S. carriers are in “survival mode,” as “foreign airlines are stealing market share from U.S. airlines and threatening domestic carriers in our own backyard.” It's tweeting calls for support, using the hash tag #SaveOurSkies.

Aviation Groups Rally at Capitol Against Shutdown

Norwegian’s New London-U.S. Flights Show Threat

What is it going to take to wake U.S. policymakers up to the fact that our nation’s aviation industry is competing on a very un-level playing field with state-owned and some other airlines?

Today’s announcement by Norwegian Air Shuttle (NAS) underscores the need to recognize the unfair advantages used by some foreign airlines to take markets from U.S. airlines. It’s time for the U.S. government to step in and level the playing field.

FedEx MEC Hosts Unity Event

As the FedEx pilots continue Section 6 negotiations with management, unity among the crew force has never been more important. On Tuesday, the FDX MEC’s Strategic Preparedness and Strike Committee (SPSC) hosted a Pilot Unity Building (PUB) event in Memphis at Buffalo Wild Wings. “We made a conscious decision to align this event with our fourth quarter MEC meeting,” explained SPSC chairman First Officer Mark Durant. “We felt this allowed us the opportunity to have our MEC officers, representatives and committee chairmen in one location to answer members’ questions.” Crowding the outside patio area with more than 200 pilots, this event demonstrated the pilots’ resolve to see this contract to the end.

The solidarity continued on Wednesday at the FDX ALPA quarterly Memphis Joint Council Meeting, as over 200 pilots attended to hear from the MEC leadership and Negotiating Committee. “Over the last several months, we have asked our pilots to show up and be counted,” said MEC Chairman Captain Scott Stratton. “The turnout at Tuesday’s PUB event and the turnout we had at our joint council meeting on Wednesday leaves no doubt that our members are engaged and are unified in their support of our Negotiating Committee. Management continues to look beyond the MEC and the Negotiating Committee, and when they do, they see a wall of pilots. It will be that pilot unity that achieves our contract.”

Cholera Outbreak in Mexico

Pilots should be aware that there has been a recent outbreak of cholera in Mexico. Out of the 159 reported cases, most are from the state of Hidalgo. There have also been two reported cases in the Federal District, one in San Luis Potosi, two in Veracruz, and nine in the State of Mexico. It is possible that these people contracted cholera when visiting Hidalgo, but this has yet to be confirmed. The Ministry of Health is launching an awareness campaign to help prevent the spread of this disease.

Pilot and Air Traffic Controller Outreach Event in Houston

All pilots are invited to the first-ever outreach meeting between pilots and air traffic controllers in Houston. This event will provide an opportunity for controllers and pilots to discuss advances in airspace and shed some light on what is going on from either side of the microphone. Representatives from the Houston Center, Houston TRACON, IAH Tower and ExpressJet ALPA will host an open forum in a town hall style meeting. The controllers plan to discuss Houston airspace, upcoming changes to the Houston area, and the NextGen air traffic control system ERAM (En Route Automation Modernization).

The event is scheduled for Friday, October 25 at 1700 at the ExpressJet ALPA office located at 3808A World Houston Parkway in Houston. Food and refreshments will be provided.

A Veterans Day event titled “Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future” will be held on Sunday, November 10, on the beautiful fantail aboard the Battleship New Jersey in Camden from 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. It is planned and sponsored by the LeRoy W. Homer Jr. Foundation, a non-profit organization that was established in memory of LeRoy W. Homer Jr., who was a U.S. Air Force veteran and the first officer of United Airlines Flight 93 that was hijacked as part of the September 11 attacks in 2001, and crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pa. The foundation provides financial support and encouragement to those interested in pursuing careers as professional pilots.
