Capt. Scott Hammond Receives ALPA’s Air Safety Award

Saint Helena Island Resident Recognized for Outstanding Leadership

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA) today recognized Delta Air Lines Capt. Scott Hammond with its Air Safety Award for his outstanding leadership in aviation safety. Capt. Hammond was presented with the award today at ALPA’s 64th Air Safety Forum in Washington, D.C.

Capt. Hammond serves as the Central Air Safety Committee chairman for Delta Air Lines unit of ALPA, coordinating the work activity of more than 150 safety volunteers in 13 subcommittees. Known around the world as a leading and respected advocate for the profession, his work to advance safety reporting programs has resulted in a collaborative approach between the pilot group and airline management.

“Capt. Hammond’s leadership in aviation safety will have a lasting effect within our industry for decades to come,” said Capt. Tim Canoll, ALPA president. “His dedication to safety and experiences as a pilot has directly influenced the ‘just culture’ that every pilot flying enjoys today. No one has strengthened the safety of air travel like he has.”

Over the course of his more than 30 years as an airline pilot, Capt. Hammond has represented the profession on several industry working groups, such as the Air Carrier Training Aviation Rulemaking Committee Flight Path Management Work Group. As the Safety chair of the SkyTeam Pilots Association, he represented the interests of pilots worldwide with the 20 member airlines of the SkyTeam Alliance. Capt. Hammond received a Presidential Citation from ALPA in 2017.

“Safety is the foundation of our association, and Captain Hammond has dedicated a lifetime of service to the pilots of Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines throughout his career,” said Capt. Bill Bartels, chairman of the Delta unit of ALPA. “We thank him for his leadership and his dedication to enhancing the safety of the profession, which has not only benefited the pilots of Delta Air Lines, but those across the industry and the world.”

A 1975 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy, Capt. Hammond completed over 35 years of active duty and national guard before retiring at the rank of Major General in 2010. He was hired by Northwest Airlines in 1986 and became a pilot for Delta in 2008, having served as a line pilot, instructor, line check airmen, and chief pilot. Capt. Hammond currently flies the Airbus A320 and resides in Saint Helena Island, S.C.
