ALPA Applauds House of Representatives Action to Promote Women in Aviation

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Capt. Tim Canoll, president of the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA), released the following statement today as the United States House of Representatives Transportation and Infrastructure Committee unanimously approved the Promoting Women in the Aviation Workforce Act of 2017, sending it to the full House for further consideration:

“This important legislation sends a strong message of encouragement to aviation enthusiasts who are looking to fulfill their dreams of becoming an airline pilot.

“When we look back at the extraordinary history of women in aviation, we see smart, courageous women who overcame tremendous obstacles to become pioneering pilots. However, there is certainly more work to be done. We are grateful to Representatives Elizabeth Esty (D-CT), Jackie Walorski (R-IN), Cheri Bustos (D-IL), Barbara Comstock (R-VA), and Mimi Walters (R-CA) for their bipartisan leadership and efforts to encourage women to pursue careers in aviation and promote programs to support their professional development in the field.

“This bill, among other priorities, will help establish an FAA Women in Aviation Advisory Board, which is an important step toward ensuring that the United States has an adequate supply of fully qualified airline pilots in the future.

“ALPA remains committed to exploring all avenues to attract the best and brightest to the piloting profession while maintaining the safety standards that have helped to make North American air transportation the safest in the world.”

Founded in 1931, ALPA is the largest airline pilot union in the world and represents over 60,000 pilots at 34 U.S. and Canadian airlines. Visit the ALPA website at alpa.org or follow us on Twitter @WeAreALPA.
