Captain Chuck Hogeman receives ALPA's 2016 Air Safety Award.

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA) today recognized United Airlines Capt. Charles “Chuck” Hogeman with its Air Safety Award for his vast contributions to aviation safety. Capt. Hogeman was presented with the award today at ALPA’s 63rd Air Safety Forum in Washington, D.C.

As Aviation Safety chairman from 2011 to 2016, Capt. Hogeman led ALPA’s efforts in advancing numerous initiatives in North America. His work to help shape and secure training and qualification standards and philosophies necessary for airline pilots has helped make Capt. Hogeman one of the leading—and most respected—advocates for the profession around the world.

“Capt. Hogeman’s dedicated work to enhance aviation safety will have a lasting effect within our industry for decades to come,” said Capt. Tim Canoll, ALPA president. “His passion for safety, combined with experience as a pilot instructor, has helped change the way pilots are trained today and have strengthened the safety of air travel.”

Over the course of his nearly 40 years as an airline pilot, Capt. Hogeman has represented the profession on numerous industry working groups such as the Commercial Aviation Safety Team (CAST) and the Aviation Safety Information and Analysis Sharing (ASIAS) Executive Board, providing professional insight on a myriad of advancements that effect pilots each and every day.

After starting his professional career in 1977 with Commuter Airlines, he was appointed the Director of Training for Aspen Airlines before joining United Airlines in 1991. Three years later was chosen as one of the initial pilot instructors to develop the airline’s Boeing 777 Advanced Qualification Program. Capt. Hogeman then went on to oversee the development on United’s simulation training program for all United aircraft.

Capt. Canoll added, “ALPA members, pilots around the world, and the traveling public owe Capt. Hogeman a debt of gratitude for his years of service and dedication to making the North American air transport system the safest in the world.”

Founded in 1931, ALPA is the largest airline pilot union in the world and represents over 57,000 pilots at 33 U.S. and Canadian airlines. Visit the ALPA website at www.alpa.org or follow us on Twitter @WeAreALPA.
