FIRE IN THE HOLD: ANTICIPATING/PREVENTING FIRES FROM PASSENGER CHECKED BAGGAGE
The number of portable electronic devices being carried by passengers on airlines has been dramatically increasing in recent years. Most of these devices are powered by lithium batteries that on rare occasions catch fire. Both regulators and the airline industry are acting to mitigate these developing hazards. Government and industry experts on this panel will discuss the latest tests demonstrating the hazards of PED fires in aircraft cargo compartments and how regulatory, policy and operational steps are being taken to mitigate the hazards.

PILOT PEER SUPPORT: THE NEXT PHASE IN ALPA’S APPROACH TO PILOT WELLNESS
Pilot Peer Support (PPS) and the five existing Pilot Assistance programs, working synergistically under the Pilot Assistance umbrella, act as a force multiplier that make Pilot Assistance as a whole, greater than the sum of its parts. Pilot Assistance is ALPA’s holistic approach to each pilot’s holistic wellness. The panel will report on how ALPA remains ahead of the curve with contributions to the 2015 Pilot Fitness ARC and the development and implementation of the newest pillar of ALPA Pilot Assistance—Pilot Peer Support, which resides under the Aeromedical Group, and gives every ALPA member access to peers, trained to help with non-work-related stress.

The smartphone video camera has contributed to making very public what used to be known by just a very few: altercations onboard airplanes caused by disruptive passengers. This panel will examine the problems caused by unruly passengers, many of which stem from intoxication, and how the government, industry and passengers can work together to keep problems on the ground and off airplanes.
