ALPA Presses Congress for One Level of Airline Security

Secure-Area Access Standards Must Apply to Passenger and All-Cargo Operations
May 16, 2012 - Capt. Sean Cassidy, first vice president of the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA), released this statement today following his testimony at a U.S. House Committee on Homeland Security Subcommittee on Transportation hearing titled “Access Control Point Breaches at our Nation’s Airports: Anomalies or Systemic Failures?”

“Controlling access to secure airport areas is critically important to the safety and security of the airline industry and the traveling public. The Transportation Security Administration and airport authorities do a good job of controlling and preventing unauthorized access to these areas. ALPA believes that, like the vast majority of airline passengers, the overwhelming share of airline workers are trustworthy individuals who want to see their industry succeed.”

DAL MEC Negotiators Reach TA on New Contract

May 15, 2012 - Late yesterday, the Delta pilots’ Negotiating Committee, of the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l, reached a tentative agreement (TA) with Delta management on an amended collective bargaining agreement, more than seven months in advance of the December 31, 2012, amendable date. In a letter to the Delta pilots, Delta MEC chairman Capt. Tim O’Malley wrote, “The Negotiating Committee and its expanded team have accomplished a great deal of work in the last two months, reaching a comprehensive Section 6 agreement in just over two months, a process that normally takes years.”

Beginning today and throughout the week, the tentative agreement will be presented to the Delta MEC, the union’s governing body, for deliberation. Until that process is complete, details of the TA will not be released.
Pilots Welcome U.S. Senate Passage of Ex-Im Bank Reforms

May 15, 2012 - Capt. Lee Moak, president of the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA), issued the following statement today regarding the U.S. Senate’s passage of important reforms to help ensure U.S. industry and workers are not harmed by the Bank’s financing in the reauthorization of the Export-Import Bank of the United States.

“Today’s passage by the U.S. Senate of reauthorization for the Export–Import Bank of the United States advances critical reforms to help stop the Bank from using U.S. taxpayers’ money to subsidize state-backed foreign airlines, providing them with an unfair competitive advantage against U.S. airlines that undermines U.S. airline industry jobs. The language in the reauthorization passed today by the Senate moves toward leveling the playing field for U.S. airlines in the global marketplace, fosters U.S. manufacturing, and protects U.S. workers’ jobs. ALPA will continue to fully engage in this issue, and we call on President Obama to swiftly sign this bill into law.”

ALPA Sends Letter to NMB on behalf of United & Continental Pilots

ALPA President Capt. Lee Moak yesterday sent the following letter to the National Mediation Board (NMB) on behalf of the United/Continental pilots with regard to negotiations and mediation for a new joint collective bargaining agreement with United Airlines. In the letter, Capt. Moak notes the unacceptably long duration of negotiations and mediation so far, expresses the pilots’ commitment to the upcoming schedule of intense negotiations and mediation, and requests that the Board further use its powers under the Railway Labor Act to help bring about an agreement with a proffer of arbitration, and if that is not accepted by the company and union, by a release from mediation.
ALPA Galvanizes Industry Efforts to Combat Pilot Fatigue

Conference Highlights Necessary Action to Build on New Safety Regulations
March 20, 2012 - The Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA), gathered representatives from government agencies, the airlines, and other aviation labor groups at a landmark conference this week to explore how the Federal Aviation Administration’s new pilot fatigue rule could be put into practice and how the airline industry can implement Fatigue Risk Management Programs and other tools to further enhance aviation safety.

“While the Federal Aviation Administration’s release of new, science-based pilot fatigue regulations was extremely important progress in passenger-carrying operations, much more work must be done if we are to truly eliminate pilot fatigue as a safety concern throughout the airline industry,” said Capt. Lee Moak, ALPA’s president. “The Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l, seized the opportunity to bring the industry together to roll up our sleeves and explore how the new regulations will be implemented to ensure a smooth transition to the new FAR Part 117 and position pilots to deliver on their commitment to the highest standards of safety.”

Moak Urges Congress to Pass Long-Term FAA Funding Bill

January 19, 2012 - ALPA continues to press Congress for a multiyear, properly funded bill that gives the FAA the resources it needs to update its aging infrastructure and implement NextGen initiatives. Capt. Lee Moak, president of the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l, yesterday wrote to members of the House of Representatives, urging these lawmakers to take action.

“We respectfully ask that you put politics and interests not relevant to the safety of our air transportation system aside, work through the issues, and make passage of a final FAA reauthorization bill your first priority as the second session of the 112th Congress begins, eliminating the need for a 23rd extension,” said Moak.

He added, “If we fail to provide stability for the FAA and continue to postpone investments in our aviation system, we will inevitably degrade the safety structures the American public relies on to safely travel by air. We must not let that happen.” Read Moak’s January 18 letter.

Veterans Day and Remembrance Day were both established to mark the official end of World War I, optimistically characterized as the “the war to end all wars.” The fighting formally ceased “at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month” in 1918, with the signing of the armistice between the warring nations.

October 20, 2011 - The Known Crewmember (KCM) program—a joint undertaking of the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l, and the Air Transport Association to provide enhanced security screening for flightcrew members—is set to start operations at the seventh and final test location, Boston-Logan Int’l Airport. Five KCM access points at BOS are scheduled to begin admitting pilots on Tuesday, October 25th. KCM was previously installed, and is operational, at Chicago O’Hare, Miami, Seattle-Tacoma, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Phoenix, and Washington Dulles airports.

Six additional airlines have joined KCM over the past two weeks—Chautauqua, Frontier, Republic, Shuttle America, SkyWest, and Sun Country—bringing the total to 28 airline participants. Pilots who fly for one of those six airlines will be able to use KCM at any of the seven test airports starting October 25th.
We Will Never Forget

September 11, 2011 - Today, we remember the terrible attacks that took place in the United States of America ten years ago.

We recognize the untold bravery of the cockpit crews, cabin crews, and passengers who were aboard United Airlines Flight 175, United Airlines Flight 93, American Airlines Flight 11, and American Airlines Flight 77.

We remain humbled by those on the ground who faced unspeakable horror with unshakable courage. Words are inadequate to honor the first-responders, fire fighters, law enforcement officers, and so many others who confronted danger without hesitation in the hope of saving others. And we stand united in spirit with the families of the pilots and all those who suffered loss that day, but who continue to face the future with determination to carry on.

On September 11, 2001, we lost our colleagues, our friends, and our family.

On September 11, 2011, the more than 53,000 members of the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l, fortify our commitment to commemorate these fallen heroes by pursuing all action necessary to secure our skies, safeguard our flights, and prevail over those who would do harm.

A Labor Day Message from ALPA President Capt. Lee Moak

September 4, 2011 - This Labor Day, September 5, Americans and Canadians will again celebrate the value of the working man and woman to our nations’ growth and also remember the price they have paid in organizing unions to achieve fair hours, wages, and job conditions for their members and, by extension, the whole working community.

Statement from ALPA President on First Air Flight 6560

August 20, 2011

Fellow ALPA pilots:

It is my sad duty to report today that we lost two of our ALPA brothers in the crash of a First Air 737 in Resolute Bay, Nunavut, Canada. Details are very limited at this time due to the extremely remote location of the airport.

I have been in close contact with the First Air MEC, and have assured them that any and all resources of the Air Line Pilots Association, International, will be available to them as we move forward. ALPA’s safety, critical incident response, legal, and benefits specialists have already started the detailed work of supporting the families of the crews and beginning the investigation into the accident.

I extend my personal sympathies to the families of those who were lost, and all of our thoughts and prayers are with the victims.

A Message from ALPA President Capt. Lee Moak: Celebrating 80 Years of Airline Pilot Advocacy

July 27, 2011 - Today we mark the 80th anniversary of the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l. What began with 13 pilots secretly meeting in a Chicago hotel has evolved into a globally recognized aviation safety advocate and the world’s largest pilot union. I want to take this opportunity to thank each of our 53,000 members in both Canada and the United States, because it’s your commitment and support that ensures ALPA’s ongoing reputation as the voice of airline pilots in North America.

Reaching a milestone like 80 years compels us to look back at the many obstacles we’ve had to overcome, and the generations of ALPA pilots who’ve dedicated their lives to promoting our profession. During the turbulent, early years of aviation, some lost their jobs while others made the ultimate sacrifice. Some negotiated industry-leading contracts while others, working together with their industry peers, contributed to ground-breaking systems and important new efficiencies.

The ALPA Mobile application provides ALPA newsfeeds pulled from the union’s website on topics ranging from “Top News” to “Safety & Security.” The app also includes a Members Only section that MECs can tailor to address their pilot groups’ particular needs, providing MEC contact information and current news items. Read more about the app, including additional functions the Association is working on, in the April edition of Air Line Pilot magazine.

The members of the Air Line Pilots Association, International, hardly need reminding that today is the ninth anniversary of the terrorist attacks against the United States of America that used four airliners as weapons of mass destruction. Nine years after 9/11, memories of that terrible day remain fresh and raw, and we continue to grieve for our friends, colleagues, and loved ones who perished. Many memorial services will take place throughout our great and resilient nation, and I hope you will be able to participate in them.

Capt. Prater’s ALPA Labor Day Message

September 4, 2010 - Unions are responsible for so many things that we can easily take for granted—health insurance, retirement benefits, days off from work, to name a few—and that’s why Labor Day should mean so much more to us than just the unofficial end of summer.

The United States celebrated its first Labor Day on Sept. 5, 1882, when members of the Central Labor Union staged a march in New York City to demand better working conditions. In Canada, some 2,000 workers represented by the Toronto Typographical Union demonstrated for a 58-hour work week, by parading through the city on April 14, 1872. Labor has come a long way from these dark days, before our governments acknowledged a union’s right to provide its members with a voice in their workplace.

Tell Congress to Support the FAA Reauthorization Bill

August 13, 2010 - U.S. senators and representatives have left D.C. for their home districts during the month-long congressional recess, so now is the ideal time to urge them to pass a comprehensive FAA reauthorization bill before the end of the year. The current FAA extension expires September 30, which means there’s little time for negotiations when Congress returns after Labor Day. In addition to providing for stable operations of the FAA and the national airspace system, the bill is a critical step toward modernization and the transition to NextGen.

The bill also includes many long-standing ALPA priorities, such as improvements in runway safety prevention, the development of wake vortex mitigation and in-flight weather detection systems including volcanic ash and icing, requirements for air carrier citizenship, and a study of hardened cockpit doors for all-cargo aircraft.
