DAL MEC Negotiators Reach TA on New Contract

May 15, 2012 - Late yesterday, the Delta pilots’ Negotiating Committee, of the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l, reached a tentative agreement (TA) with Delta management on an amended collective bargaining agreement, more than seven months in advance of the December 31, 2012, amendable date. In a letter to the Delta pilots, Delta MEC chairman Capt. Tim O’Malley wrote, “The Negotiating Committee and its expanded team have accomplished a great deal of work in the last two months, reaching a comprehensive Section 6 agreement in just over two months, a process that normally takes years.”

Beginning today and throughout the week, the tentative agreement will be presented to the Delta MEC, the union’s governing body, for deliberation. Until that process is complete, details of the TA will not be released.
FDX Pilots Secure Across-the-Board Raise

January 5, 2012 - The FedEx pilots’ current collective bargaining agreement (CBA), which was ratified in March 2011, provided a unique duration clause that allows ALPA to make the decision to reenter Section 6 negotiations after 12 months or extend the agreement an additional 12 months, while securing a 3 percent across-the-board raise for 2012. This week, the FDX MEC held a special MEC meeting with the agenda largely focused on the decision to either make the CBA amendable in early 2012 in lieu of retaining the 3 percent across-the-board raise for 2012 or retaining the 3 percent raise for 2012 and continuing in interim discussions throughout 2012.

In addition to today’s event in Houston, additional visits are currently planned for Cleveland, Ohio, and Bridgeport, Conn.

FedEx Pilots Join With All ALPA and UPS Pilots Demanding One Level of Safety

November 21, 2011 - Nearly 2 years ago, on August 10, 2010, the President signed the Airline Safety and Federal Aviation Administration Act of 2010 which required that the Federal Aviation Administration update flight and duty time rules that dated by the 1960’s. The FAA completed its work and eventually, the new rules came before the Office of Management and Budget for review. The Office of Management and Budget is anticipated to release the new flight and duty rules addressing airline pilot fatigue as early as tomorrow. As part of the final review process, strong consideration has been given to a “cargo cut out” which would exempt cargo carriers from compliance with the same Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR) rules as non-cargo carriers.

Continental Pilots Welcome Furloughed United Pilots to Their Ranks

July 15, 2011 - This week, the Continental pilots learned that United Airlines pilots on furlough will be offered flying positions to fill as many as 201 pilot vacancies at Continental. An agreement negotiated between the two pilot groups and with airline management following the announced merger last year stipulates that new hire pilot positions at either airline will be offered first to pilots on furlough from the other airline, in seniority order. Continental recalled all of its 148 pilots on furlough earlier this year; United currently has 1437 pilots on furlough. Both pilot groups are represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA).

Continental Pilots Protest Additional Scope Violations

June 20, 2011 - The Continental pilots, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association Int’l (ALPA), have filed two group grievances against United to protest violations of scope provisions in their collective bargaining agreement applicable to a merger during the period of separate pilot contracts and operations of the two airlines, legacy Continental and legacy United. The first, filed June 2, 2011, concerns removal of B-767 aircraft from the Continental fleet (by sale). The second charge, filed June 16, 2011, is related to a reduction in the ratio of Continental to United flying required with respect to twin-aisle aircraft, specifically for the third quarter of 2011. ALPA is seeking prompt correction of these issues by the Company, including a stop to any attempts at further sales of B-767 aircraft, correction to the ratio of flying performed by Continental to United, monetary damages and all other appropriate relief.

Canadian North Pilots Ratify Tentative Labour Agreement

Pilot Negotiators Garner First Contract as ALPA Members
June 16, 2011 - The pilots of Canadian North, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA), have ratified a tentative labour agreement with members of the Canadian North Pilots Association (CNPA). Nearly 80 percent of pilots who cast ballots voted in favor of the contract, making it the first collective agreement since they joined ALPA earlier this year.

“We are really pleased with the results,” said Capt. Chris Kampen, Canadian North’s master executive chairman at ALPA. “The successful ratification by Canadian North pilots represents more than two years of hard work at the negotiating table.” The achievements made in the agreement reflect advances in employment protection for long-term job stability, pay rate, and overall quality-of-life improvements. Their previous contract expired in December 2008 but negotiations were postponed until December 2009.

United, Continental Pilots: Work Remains Before UAL/CAL Merger Considered a Success

June 8, 2011 - As shareholders of United Airlines gather today for the annual United Airlines shareholders meeting, it is incumbent upon United CEO Jeff Smisek and his management team to thoroughly explain the facts regarding the progress of the United/Continental merger. Much work remains to be completed before they can proclaim the merger a success, according to the pilots of United and Continental Airlines.

“’On schedule’ are two words Mr. Smisek should avoid in addressing the shareholders regarding this merger,” said Capt. Wendy Morse, chairman of the United Master Executive Council of the Air Line Pilots Association. “There is no bigger task in front of United management than reaching agreement with the pilots on a Joint Collective Bargaining Agreement and this task is nowhere near on schedule. Until an agreement is reached, this merger cannot be considered anything close to a success.”

Air Wisconsin Pilots Withdraw from ASAP Program, Citing Management Program Breach

April 7, 2011 - Pilot leaders of Air Wisconsin Airlines Corporation (AWAC ) will no longer support or participate in the airline’s Aviation Safety Action Program (ASAP) effective April 7. Representatives for the pilots’ union made this difficult decision following recent actions by the AWAC flight department, which interfered with the conduct and integrity of the program. The goal of the ASAP is to enhance aviation safety through the prevention of accidents and incidents by using reports voluntarily submitted by pilots in a pro-active, non-punitive environment.

“The recent actions by Air Wisconsin management to circumvent the program have led the Air Wisconsin pilots to question the integrity of the company’s ASAP program and its commitment to the employees of the company and the traveling public,” said Capt. Joe Ellis, chairman of the Air Wisconsin Master Executive Council (MEC). “The ARW MEC believes that management’s refusal to follow the processes outlined in the program that lead to safety enhancements indicates the company does not value the program.”

Evergreen International Airlines Pilots Overwhelmingly Authorize Union to Call Strike

97 Percent Vote “Yes” to Walk if Contract Talks Fail
January 10, 2011 - The crewmembers of Evergreen International Airlines, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA), resoundingly support conducting a lawful strike if an agreement is not reached with their management. In a recent strike ballot issued by the union leadership to the pilot group, an overwhelming 97 percent of crewmembers voted in favor of a lawful strike, should it become necessary to conclude a fair collective agreement with Evergreen management. More than 86 percent of eligible pilots participated in the polling. The crewmembers have been in negotiations since 2005.

“This vote serves as notice to Evergreen management that we are united and resolved to get an industry-standard contract now,” said William Fink, chairman of the Evergreen chapter of the ALPA. “We do not want a strike, we want a contract, but we are ready to do what it takes for an acceptable agreement. The time has passed to get this done and the ball is now in management’s court.”

January 4, 2011 - Late last week, arbitrator Richard Bloch notified the CAL MEC that he had ruled in favor of ALPA in its expedited scope arbitration held in early December. The arbitration resulted from ALPA’s group grievance addressing management’s post-merger decision to outsource flying using the CO designator code on 70-seat jets from Continental hubs. The Association saw this as a violation of the Continental collective bargaining agreement (CBA) and an attempt by management to leverage its position in negotiations in favor of outsourcing.

Statement by Capt. Wendy Morse And Capt. Jay Pierce Regarding the Closing Of the Merger Between United and Continental Airlines

October 1, 2010 - “Today, United Airlines and Continental Airlines officially closed on the merger that creates the world’s largest airline. We congratulate the Company for this milestone in our airline’s history and recognize the celebratory mood as the new CEO and other company officials make the rounds to hubs across the system to mark the occasion.

“While the jovial mood of the new United management team is understandable, the pilots of the combined airline are not yet ready to celebrate. We will welcome the true closing of the merger, which will happen only after a Joint Collective Bargaining Agreement (JCBA) with the pilots is achieved and the two pilot groups are combined.
ExpressJet pilots reviewing proposed sale, merger of airline

August 4, 2010 - Capt. Chris Cashmareck, chairman of the ExpressJet pilots’ unit of the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l, reacted today to the formal announcement of the intended sale of ExpressJet Airlines to SkyWest Holdings, Inc., with a subsequent merger of the airline with Atlantic Southeast Airlines.

Said Capt. Cashmareck, “Every transaction presents opportunities and risks. We need to review and evaluate the plan for the combined airline before we can commit to taking a position to support or oppose the sale/merger. What I can state unequivocally is that, just as airline mergers over the past few years have shown us, it will take pilot involvement and support to realize any true measure of success for this or any transaction.”
