Delta Pilots Union Elects MEC Chairman and Negotiating Committee

ATLANTA, Ga.—Today, the nine Local Executive Councils (LECs) of the Delta Master Executive Council (MEC), represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, International, met in Atlanta to elect an MEC chairman. The Delta MEC is the governing body of the airline’s 12,000 pilots.

Captain John Malone was elected to the position of MEC chairman. Captain Malone will serve the remainder of the current term, assuming his new duties on September 15 and serving through December 31, 2016.

Captain Malone is an Atlanta-based 767-300ER pilot at Delta Air Lines, Inc. He was hired by Delta in 1988. Prior ALPA service includes first officer representative in Dallas, Negotiating Committee member, Negotiating Committee chairman, and Delta MEC chairman.

Captain Malone received a Bachelor of Arts in history from Loyola University Maryland in 1981. He served in the U.S. Navy, 1981–1988, as C-2A pilot.

In his address to the MEC, Captain Malone stated, “We need to own our mistakes, listen to the pilots, reconnect with them, encourage their participation and, most importantly, treat all our fellow pilots with respect—even the most ardent critic. ALPA is the only union that can deliver the services needed to restore our profession.

“This weekend is Labor Day. On this weekend I want you to take real pride in your leadership role of protecting and promoting working people in America. What we—what ALPA does impacts all of labor in America.”

The MEC also elected a new Negotiating Committee. Captain Steve Uvena was elected as chairman. F/O Ron Hay, Captain Heiko Kallenbach, and Captain Jeff Anderson were elected as members. The committee will serve beginning immediately and for a period not to exceed six months after the signing of a new Section 6 agreement.

Founded in 1931, ALPA is the largest airline pilot union in the world and represents over 52,000 pilots at 31 U.S. and Canadian airlines. Visit the ALPA website at www.alpa.org or follow us on Twitter @WeAreALPA.
